North Greenbush, NY Retirement Community Helped Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor Residents Recover from Hurricane Harvey

Residents of local retirement community, Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor, threw a “gratitude party” for the residents of Eastwyck Village in North Greenbush, NY last week. On March 16, residents of both communities set out refreshments and fired up their iPads to FaceTime with one another.

Members of both communities became neighbors with a mere 1500 miles between them. Friendships were forged. Inspired by stories of unprecedented levels of damage caused by Hurricane Harvey, Eastwyck Village sent an unsolicited donation check to Brazos Towers several months ago. Eastwyck Village specifically requested the money be used to purchase something special for the residents of Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor and for a big party. Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor purchased a much-needed paper shredder for the Resident Library, in addition to planning the shared party.

Conversation was lively during the event. “We can send you some snow,” laughed one Eastwyck resident. Other residents of the New York-based retirement community simply expressed how happy they were to have been able to help.

Some residents got to experience FaceTime for the first time, and had been unaware the technology existed. As the party ended, the residents of Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor honored their new friends with a song written especially for them, set to the music of New York, New York:

Start spreading the news
Storm Harvey is gone
We hope to never see it
Ever again

Our big Texas town
Is grateful to you
Our Friends at Eastwyck Village
In Old New York

We stayed up in a city that didn’t sleep
the rain kept tumbling down
it seemed like for weeks.

Our work to rebuild
has melted away
we made a brand new start of it
in Houston town.

If we can
make it here, we’ll make it
anywhere
We’re Houston strong.
Thank you, New York!

“It’s amazing how an event as tragic as Hurricane Harvey can end with such a tremendous display of love and gratitude,” says Michelle Watkins, spokeswoman for Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor. “It just proves yet again that people caring about people is sometimes all that matters. Houston strong and New York strong, united we stand.”
